Travel Project

"I never travel without my diary. One should always have something sensational to read in the train."
- Oscar Wilde

It began in New Zealand...

...in 2007, at the height of the southern summer; the first of many spontaneous road trips I would take that year. After 3 days of driving, I had nearly reached the end of the road, literally. I'd been in the car for eight hours that day. In the middle of a heatwave. And my air conditioning was broken.

When I finally arrived at Ninety Mile Beach I was beyond exhausted. I was ready to call it a night when the most incredible sunset burst through the clouds, igniting the sky in an array of vibrant reds, oranges and purples. I knew it wouldn't last long, so I jumped straight back in the car and hurried down to the beach.

It was only after I had managed to run all the way to the sand dunes that I realised I had forgotten my camera! But it didn't matter... The surf was rolling in, the sky was gloriously ablaze and, atop the sand dunes stretching for as far as the eye could see, the briny breeze was exhilarating! It was at that moment that I decided to begin documenting my travels through photography, to one day share with the world.

The day after, I immediately started The Travel Project and it has now become one of my favourite forms of storytelling; a photographic journal of my travels where each image is intended to represent as much about that place, its character or landmarks as possible with a single image.
